We are the church.
Now, not next.
Many times, we hear and say that our youth are the future of the church. Personally, I’m not a big fan of that statement. Why? Because our youth are the church. Now–not next.
This identity is taken from two places in Scripture: I Timothy 4:12 and Proverbs 27:1.
I Timothy 4:12 says, “Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”
This verse tells young people how to live among other people, both Christians and non-Christians alike. Our young people should lead by their words (Ephesians 4:29), actions (1 John 3:18), love (John 13:35), faith (Hebrews 11:1; James 2:17), and innocence (Matthew 18:1-5).
Proverbs 27:1 says, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”
If we do not know what tomorrow (or even today) may bring, why call our youth the future of the church? They are the church today. We are the church. Now–not next.
